Invasive Plants

Invasive aquatic species are a significant threat to Maine lakes. Shallow lakes are especially vulnerable since the weeds will be able to get an adequate supply of sunlight. Since Big Bear and Little Bear Pond are relatively shallow they are particularly susceptible. These weeds are very aggressive and hardy and can quickly spread from a single fragment or seed. The State of Maine has implemented a $500 fine for boaters who do not clean fragments of plants off of their boat trailers and boats. They have also implemented a boat registration sticker to raise funds to help fight these aquatic invaders.
